3 Best Practices for Fixing Sentences That Make Everyone Love It

Ah, the drudgery of daily fixing sentences work. It can easily turn into a monotonous task with very little learning.

Instead of just the basic fix my sentence worksheet where students simply correct one or two sentences and then put it away without looking at it again, try these few tips for fixing sentences that will make it more engaging for everyone.

Correct One Sentence Each Day

Correct one sentence each day. This keeps it small and simple for both you and your students but gives daily practice.

Don’t fall into the trap of simply assigning your students to correct the sentences and then put them away and quickly move on. Students won’t learn anything this way.

Plan in 5 extra minutes to correct the sentences with your students. Talk to them about what corrections need to be made and most importantly WHY they need to make those corrections.

Many times, sentences can have more than one way to correct them and this provides an opportunity for discussion with your students about how they corrected a particular sentence and why they choose to correct them one way over the other.

Read the Sentence Out Loud

At the beginning of your fixing sentences practice, it is helpful to read the sentence aloud. Starting by reading the sentence aloud will help students hear errors that they may have missed if they were reading it silently to themselves.

Beyond that, an added benefit to students, especially those learning how to read, is that they hear and see you model reading skills such as fluency & expression.

Write Corrections On the Board for Students to See

While you are correcting sentences, write the corrections on the board in addition to saying them aloud.

You can call on students for suggestions and write corrections on the whiteboard for students to see how to make corrections. This practice is especially helpful for ELL students or students with reading or writing difficulties.

Make it fun! Give rewards for volunteers to come up. Turn it into a game of some kind. Even something as simple as finding fun new colors of markers can make it more exciting for students.
