How To Know What You Want as a Teacher (Even If You’re a People Pleaser)

Do you know what you actually want as a teacher, or just what everyone else needs from you? If you’re used to being a people pleaser, here’s where to start figuring that out.

How To Know What You Want as a Teacher (Even If You’re a People Pleaser)

If someone asked you right now what you actually want, could you answer? Most teachers can’t. You can tell me exactly what your students need, what your admin needs, what your own kids need. Ask what you want, and it’s silence.

This is part 2 of a 3-part replay series pulled from the exact episodes that came out with my book two years ago, and they still hold up completely. We’re covering the second step of the Inside-Out Teacher Framework: Choose. Once you’ve started observing your thoughts, feelings, and nervous system (that was part 1 of this series), this episode is about how to know what you actually want and use that to make real decisions, instead of letting everyone else’s needs decide for you.

Why Teachers Struggle to Know What They Want (And What to Do About It)

If you’re a people pleaser, this will probably sound familiar: you go looking for the answer to “what do I want” and come up blank, because you’ve spent years answering “what does everyone else need” instead. In this episode, you’ll hear why that happens, why people pleasing shows up in almost every coaching conversation I have, whether it’s about a classroom situation or something at home, and how to start figuring out what you actually want even when people pleasing has been your default for years.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

How to know what you actually want when people pleasing has made that question feel impossible to answer, the concept of “the manual” (the invisible rulebook we hold other people to, and hold ourselves to, without ever saying it out loud), why wanting love and belonging is the root of most people-pleasing habits, the difference between choosing consciously as a teacher versus running on autopilot, how to use your own senses and values to figure out what you want, why your brain fights to be right more than it wants you to be happy, the bridge and ladder thought tools for shifting your thinking one step at a time, and why goal-setting belongs in “Choose” rather than “Align.”

New episodes of the podcast officially relaunch September 25th, and I’m hosting a masterclass at the end of October that goes even deeper into this framework. Get on the Teacher Brain Break newsletter so you don’t miss either one.

Quotes from This Episode

“Would you stop thinking about what everyone wants? What do you want?”

“We spend so much of our lives just wanting to make everyone else happy.”

“Our brain wants to be right more than it wants us to be happy.”

“It’s not the circumstance of anything that makes us happy. It’s our thoughts about where we are right now.”

“Creating a life that feels good to you starts with knowing what feels good to you in the first place.”

“Are you making space for what you actually love to do? What parts of yourself have you let go of that you miss, perhaps like maybe at some point in your life you like to sing or play soccer as a child growing up, or maybe you love to dance to music.”

“Our brain wants to be right. More than it wants us to be happy. Let me say that again, our brain wants to be right. Even more than it wants to us to be happy. Like it’s like, no, I’d rather you be sad and I’d be right. Then you’ll be happy and I be wrong. Which isn’t that kind of funny?”

How to Figure Out What YOU Actually Want as a Teacher (Coaching Framework Series: Part 2) === [00:00:00] You spend all day making sure the little humans in your classroom, or maybe the big humans, depending on what grade level you teach, but either way, you’re making sure that they have what they need, that they’re taken care of. They have a pencil. They have what they need to do their assignments. Their needs are met. You, you go above and beyond for those students. I just know it if you hit play on this episode. And then you go home, and you make sure that everyone else, uh, has what they need too. Maybe you get your kids to different activities. Maybe you’re making dinner. Maybe you’re asking your partner how their day went. And there’s a chance that maybe you’re doing so much for everyone else that you very rarely take the time to ask yourself, “What is it that I want? What is it that I need?” Not what your students want, not what your admin wants or what your children want or what your partner wants, but what do you want? When is the last time you actually asked yourself that question? And if it’s been a while, and if you maybe even don’t know the answer to that question, this episode is for you [00:01:00] Welcome to Educate and Rejuvenate, the podcast to help you revitalize your teaching, renew your spirit and reignite your passion for life. I’m your host, Kelsea Sorensen, a former teacher, current homeschool mom, published author and certified life coach. Whether you are a teacher in a traditional classroom, homeschool from your kitchen table Or anywhere in between. I am on a mission to help you not only survive as an educator, but thrive. Get ready to uplevel your skills with incredible insights from guest experts and discover the missing piece, rejuvenating yourself. Are you ready to both educate and rejuvenate? Let’s go. Welcome back to Educate and Rejuvenate the podcast. This is part two of our coaching framework series. These episodes were originally recorded back in 2024 in preparation for the release of my book, Educate and Rejuvenate. You can see this is [00:02:00] my copy right here. It’s actually, this is my, original screener copy. You can see it has this little mark on here. I cannot believe we are about two years out from when this book came out. So I’m going to be giving away some signed copies. Stay tuned to hear about that. But the reason I am re-airing these episodes is because they are still so applicable today. So if you missed last week’s episode, that was all about step one of my coaching framework, which I now call the Inside Out Teacher Framework. I’ll be talking about that even more so in the new episodes, but it’s really because as you’ll listen through these, it’s about instead of letting everything outside of you, everything that you can’t control, that we try to control usually, control us. Instead, we tune in inward and notice what it is we actually can control, what it is that we maybe haven’t been paying attention to, and that is actually where our power comes from to create the life that we want inside and outside of teaching, to be able to educate and rejuvenate, which is the whole point of this podcast, this book, of the Educate and Rejuvenate [00:03:00] Club, of our events, everything that we do. That is what I’m here to support you with, really, at the end of the day. And that is what this Inside Out Teacher Framework helps you to do. The three steps are observe, choose, and align. Last week, we talked all about observe. This week, we’re going to talk all about choose. So now that we’re tuning into ourselves, we’re observing, we’re learning some things about ourselves that we maybe weren’t taking the time to notice, that is where we get to be intentional and choose. What do I want to do with that information? What is it that I actually want? What is it that I actually need? And what are some intentional things I plan to do? And they can be small, but that I’m going to do to help get me in the direction that I want to go. So that is what we’re talking about today. Really excited for this episode. Now, if you are watching this on YouTube, again, you would’ve seen me hold up this book. Um, I highly recommend if you are on audio, if you are on Apple or Spotify or any of those other platforms, hop on over to YouTube if you can. We are really going to be prioritizing that as we relaunch the podcast. Sometimes there’ll be some great visuals. The other thing that I love about [00:04:00] YouTube is that you can comment right underneath the episode. So I know that each week that I am going to be in your earbuds and then on your screen as well for if you’d like to watch or you can kind of, like, watch listen. That’s what I tend to do with YouTube. I don’t necessarily stare at the screen the whole time. Um, but there is a comment feature right underneath, so we can have discussions about what is happening. So what I want to do is this month, if you’re listening live in September of 2026 to this series, I want you to comment below these videos. Each comment is going to be an entry to get a signed copy. You will get a signed copy of my book you- if you’re one of the three winners. I’m going to choose one on each of these three episodes to be the winner. So comment on the episode, something you learned, something you’re taking away from it. Reply to someone else’s comment. I really want this to be somewhere where we can engage in discussion about these episodes as well. So with that, um, if you’re also watching this even later and the giveaway’s over, still comment. That is just what we’re trying to engage and encourage, and make sure, um, again, I have a lot of things coming up. Like in October [00:05:00] 2026, I’m going to be teaching a master class that dives even deeper into this framework. But because these videos and episodes live much longer than that, I’m probably going to try to touch on those just quickly. So make sure that you’re on our email list as well, where you can get more details about all the current happenings, and if it’s like two years later and you’re watching this, you can find out when is the master class we’re teaching in 2028 or 2030. That sounds so futuristic and crazy, but maybe you’re watching it then. Um, make sure you’re on our email list. You can go to educateandrejuvenate.com/teacherbrainbreak. That is the weekly newsletter that I send out that gives your brain a little break. Um, if you like this podcast, you’re going to love the newsletter as well. So make sure you’re signed up for that. It’s free. And also, um, the book as well. We’re celebrating two years of it. Um, grab a copy if you like what you’re hearing on these three episodes because the book is really where the framework, the origin of it comes from. And, um, you can also read it on Kindle or Kindle Unlimited as well. So with that, let’s get to today’s episode [00:06:00] I am so thrilled for this episode to be popping into your feed today. And in case you missed the announcement that. Should have popped into your podcast feed on Thursday, the book educate and rejuvenate is now live. You can go on Amazon, you can find a copy. Many of you are already getting our hands on your copies. This book launch is so fun and I love what this project that I’ve been working on for almost the past two years, and really diving into research, really diving into my own personal work, is now coming to life to help him serve all of you because you know, it’s been kind of me doing the deep work on the backend, and now I’m able to share. All of it with all of you. And of course, I want you to have this framework. I want everyone to benefit from the work I put into this book, which is why I’m basically sharing the whole framework here. On the podcast. So everyone can benefit from the content that I created from this book. So you’re basically getting a cliff notes version. Over this three episode series, because I want you, my friend, my podcast listener. [00:07:00] You are here. You’re giving me your time. You’re giving me, The support by listening to this podcast or by following on Instagram, like in commenting on posts, that really helps me whatever you’re doing to be part of this community, engaging in our Facebook group. I want to give back to you because when you give me your time, which I know is such a valuable asset, when you are a busy educator, whether you’re teaching in a classroom or homeschooling or wherever you’re doing. I want to give you everything I’ve got that I can hear in the podcast in podcast format. And also, I am so excited about this book too. So I just want to give you a little sneak peek and if you love it, you’re definitely going to want to snag a copy of the book to. So last week we talked all about the first step of the framework, which is to observe yourself. Now I want to review that really quickly for you. So basically when we are observing ourselves, if you missed it, I really recommend going back and listening to that episode. Where you’ll really get a deep understanding of what it means to observe yourself. But what we talked about is really. Kind of [00:08:00] pulling back and observing. What we do. I mean, it really is kind of self-explanatory right. We’re observing ourselves, but you have to like, what is it that I’m observing? We want to look at our thoughts. We’ve got to see what we’re thinking, because we’re thinking so many thoughts in a day, right. That they’re just go, go, go popping in our head. And we just automatically believe the thoughts that come into our head because. I mean, we don’t have time to notice every single thought our brain is wired to be very efficient and just go with whatever pops into our heads. So unless we actually be very conscious and observe it and see what’s going on in there. Our thoughts might be driving feelings that are causing us to feel overwhelmed or anxious when maybe we don’t need to be. We also have to look at our feelings. One to actually pay attention to what we’re feeling is a big part of the human experience. Right. I mean, it’s really the full experience. Everything we want in our life is based on how we want it to make us feel. Because we might think oh, I really want to lose some weight or I really want a more organized classroom, or I really want to finish my ESL [00:09:00] endorsement or whatever it is you might be doing. And we think we’ll feel so much better when we do that, but really it’s because of what we’re making that mean. With our thoughts, but also we don’t even notice. Our feelings, right. So we want to take some time to tap in and be like, what is the I’m feeling a process of those emotions and pay attention? What feelings are you feeling the most often? How does it feel in your body getting in tune with that? And we talk about that a lot in last week’s episode. So make sure you tune into that. And then we also want to observe our nervous system because sometimes we’re actually in an activated state. Sometimes it’s not just our thoughts. Sometimes it’s our body trying to protect us. And our nervous system coming into play with a fight flight freeze or fawn response. Our body still needs to regulate and come back. To homeostasis. I talk about how it all comes together, how we want to observe our nervous system, make sure we activate it or make sure we are regulated. And then if we are, we can look at our thoughts. We can look at our feelings and really just get clarity on what is going on in my life. And there are things obviously that are out of our control, right. But we are really wanting to focus on what is in our control. [00:10:00] We can’t control. The stimulus, but we can control the response. Right? So that is the observe yourself in a nutshell. And when, once we’ve done that, once we kind of start observing ourselves, and again, this isn’t something we stop. In fact, I want to share the actual section description for the, choose your direction. Just a second. We’re going to continue observing, but we can start taking those observations and. Seeing, oh, what is it? It can learn from this. What is it I want to change? What is it? I like, what is it that I want to do more of? And that is where we’re becoming more conscious. We’re choosing our direction instead of just letting our automatic thoughts are automatic feelings or our nervous system dysregulation run the show. We were observing, we were paying attention. We’re regulating when we needed to, instead of staying stuck in a. Dysregulated state or being stuck in a negative thought spiral or just, you know, Constantly feeling overwhelmed. We are paying attention to that. We are. Tending to our own needs. Let me share what the section description of the book actually says. And [00:11:00] so what do you mean by the section description is the book is actually divided into three sections, so the podcast episode last week covered five chapters. And then the podcast episode this week, and those are the five chapters about observing yourself. Now that one is the most amount of chapters, because there’s just so much to it. With our chapters all about your thoughts, about your feelings, all about your nervous system, all about what it means to be an observer and having self compassion and non-judgment and all of that. And really tying it all together. so there’s five chapters in that section. And then section two is three chapters about choosing your direction. And that’s what we’re talking about today on the podcast. And then next week, we’ll talk all about the third section, another three chapters called align yourself. And then in between each section, there is a section description and even kind of a cute little picture that you’ll see when you get your copy of the book. If you snag one, there’s like kind of going up the staircase and it shows that you’re not, ending the, choosing your direct or observe yourself that stays underneath as a foundation of this staircase the whole time, but you’re kind of climbing up. It’s a great visual that [00:12:00] you’ll see when you snag a copy of the book. Okay. So that section description says, now that you are starting to observe yourself, we can use those observations to choose what we want in our lives. We’re delving deep into our psyche to truly understand ourselves and using our unique perspectives to guide our choices. We’re enhancing our observational skills while incorporating strategies for conscious decision-making. So it’s not moving on from one step to the next, but adding another layer it’s like, let me try to bike first pedaling with training wheels and balancing without losing sight of the pedaling. This framework adds layer, star approach without pausing the ongoing process of self observation. So when we start the chapter. The first chapter six, all about the choosing your direction. I start with a story from the movie, the notebook that you might’ve seen. And the reason is because what I’ve found as I’ve coached is a lot of times when I ask a question, a lot of times, if, it’s a deeper question, that’s kind of not like, oh, what happened here, but oh, why this, or why that when I’m coaching. A really common answer [00:13:00] is, I don’t know, like we don’t know the answer to that question. And it really reminds me of the scene from the notebook where, Ryan Gosling’s character, I believe his name is Noah and Rachel McAdams character. Oh my gosh. I can not remember. Her characters name, but there. They’re fighting. I’m pretty sure it’s like raining there by a car or something. And. He’s kind of like frustrated. She’s like, you know, decide which guys she wants to date or whatever. And what he says to her is would you stop thinking about what everyone wants, stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want, what do you want? What do you want? And you can look it up on YouTube. It’s actually, like, she’s just standing there. Like, it’s not that simple. It’s not that simple. And you know that. So a lot of us feel like we don’t really know what we want. We’re just like, oh, this person wants this. This person wants that this person wants that. And I don’t know what to do because they can’t make everyone happy. And that’s true. You can’t make everyone happy. Right. So that is why we need to be able to choose our own direction. Do what is the we need to do that makes us feel good. That aligns us with ourselves and. But we [00:14:00] don’t know how to do that. Right. Because we spent so much of our lives. Just want to make everyone else happy. And the reason that is. So you might to make everyone’s happy. What I hear from a lot of teachers is they, you know, end up staying so late after school because they’re doing all the things, trying to make everyone happy, or helping this person, helping that person. Wanting to make their built-in bird perfect. Wanting to, Do all these different things, right. And we don’t really stop to question, like, why is it I’m doing that? Do I need to be doing that? What does it really want? What is, why is I decide to become a teacher in the first place? Like kind of circling back to all of that, right. And the reason is like we have these condition beliefs about ourselves. These neuropathways that we observed you. Might’ve seen some of those patterns when we were observing ourselves and we need to figure out what is beyond those, what is what we truly want. And the reason a lot of times we get conditioned in this way is because love and belonging is actually what we want more than really anything else. That’s what we’re innately creative for. And it’s such a good thing, right? Because we want to be connected with others. And even, especially in next week’s episode, I’m going to talk about how community is such an [00:15:00] important part of this. But the problem lies when we think we can’t have community, we can’t have belonging unless we do everything to make other people happy and what they think matters more than what we think. And one thing I’ve noticed that has been surprising to me in a way of what we’ve coached, but also not. But is how common of a theme people pleasing has been with teachers with homeschool parents everyone I coach is an educator, but a lot of times situations will come up. You don’t have to be coached just on, is something that has to be a teaching. It can also be like with a family member or with really anything in life. What I’ve just noticed though, is educators as a whole, in all areas of their life. And I think it’s because, you know, when we go into teaching, especially for those of us who choose to be educators, we love helping people. Right. It’s a big part of it. And we want other to be happy, other people to be happy. We want to do A-plus work all the time. A lot of times, those of us who were teachers, we got good grades in school growing up. Right. And we worry so much. What other people think feel and do versus what are we thinking, feeling and doing? we don’t want to not think about anyone else, obviously. I’m not telling you like, oh, I need to become completely self centered. [00:16:00] I, we need to be a narcissist or anything like that. We don’t need to do that, but we also need to give you some equal air time to what is it I’m thinking, feeling and want. And also, what do they want? I’ll take that into consideration while I make a decision. That’s still true to myself But we usually don’t take that time to question what it is that we think feel and do, because we are so focused on what everyone else. Wants us to think, feel and do right. And another thing we tend to do is we want external validation from others to make us happy. It’s a whole concept. I talk about in the book called the manual, which we won’t have time for today. It might be another podcast, but it’s also fully outlined in the book, but it’s basically how we create, like we, don’t only, we do the things we want to make other people happy and then we have other things that we want other people to do to make us happy. It’s like, oh, my colleagues or my abdomen. Or my neighbor or my children should do all of these things. Right. And we just kind of have these manuals, That we create. And I talk about a little more in the self-love challenge too. Again, like I mentioned, I keep wanting to just keep talking about all these things, but I’m also trying to be mindful of your time [00:17:00] and keep these podcast episodes to around 30 minutes. But that’s where the manual is that we create these manuals in our mind of what other people want. And we hold them to that and we think they need to make us happy with this because I’m trying to make them happy with that where instead the healthy thing would be for us to eat, Take ourselves into consideration as well. And we can’t control other people. Right. They’re a circumstance we can control ourselves though. So what we’re really diving into when we want to choose our direction and get to know ourselves is like, What is it from our observations that we want to do? Right. What does at least one thing that was working well that you noticed from your observations? What are some things that you love? Like if you just tap into yourself, what do you love? What do you love to taste to see, to touch, to feel tap into your senses for a sec. Do you love warm cookies? Buzzy socks are good. Cup of coffee or smell of the rain or the sound of the ocean. The sound of music playing on the radio. And how are those things currently in your life? Are you making space for what you actually love to do? What parts of yourself have you let go of that you miss, perhaps like maybe at some point in your life [00:18:00] you like to sing or play soccer as a child growing up, or maybe you love to dance to music. 1 0 1 is watching. Is there any part of the younger you that wants to still be there? And again, it might be like, no, that was the thing in the past. That’s totally fine. But. Sometimes we push things away and it’s like, oh, what do I actually want? Did actually want to keep that. But it kind of stifled it because other people didn’t like it. What are your top values? There’s no right or wrong here. What is most important to you? Your family, your friends, your teaching career. Your faith, your spirituality. Again, what are your top values and how are they reflected in your life? And there are so many more questions we talk into to talk about too. I’m not going to have time to go into all of them today, but they’re all in the book and in your workbook that you will get for free when you buy the book. Oh my gosh. The workbook is so beautiful and there’s so many journal prompts or so we exercises. So not only are you going to read and consume lots of content, that’s way more than I can go into on these three podcast episodes, but you’re going to get a workbook that is going to allow you to apply everything you learned. It’s going to be great. And then it really paying attention to how would becoming this version of you. [00:19:00] Your most authentic self impact your teaching? How is it going to make you a better educator? Because when we take care of ourselves, we’re better able to take care of others. Right. And just tapping into that. Why, why did you decide to teach in the first place? Are you still in touch with that now? You’ll continue asking these questions and choosing your direction. And for me, and it’s not even the question is really just to get you going. It’s really all about what is it from your observations that you’re noticing that you like, what don’t you like? And for me I’ve been doing a lot, again, this is an ongoing thing, this whole process. It’s not okay, I’m going to one time observing at one time twos and one time in line. For me, I’ve been doing a lot of observing and choosing again. And for me, one example of it is homeschooling this year. I really decided to switch things up. We’d been kind of doing the same thing, using a similar curriculum the past three years. I know it was, Just starting to feel like a lot. Like, oh, I’m tired of this. So I really decided to switch things up this year. I’m using more of our own education, rejuvenate resources that I love. My kids love. I also got an online curriculum to cover the baseline so they can be doing that while I kind of get some work done. And we’re also doing a lot of [00:20:00] reading together and writing prompts from the educate and rejuvenate writing prompts. And it, and I’m so thrilled about this new direction we’re taking with homeschooling. And of course the co de-mining management. Of course I could have done mind management and been like, oh, I want to keep doing it this other way. I can reprioritize. So I can’t do it that way, but also you can be like, no, what I’m doing, isn’t working. I’m gonna choose a different direction. We’re going to do it this way. That feels better. Right. And that’s what it’s all about is creating a life that feels good to you. And last week. Even since recording last week’s episode, we went to Maui for a week. And what was crazy to you is the concept of how long the days were while we were in Maui. Like when I didn’t have work when I didn’t have homeschooling, when I, our kids actually weren’t with us. So it was just me and Randy and it was so crazy that I was like, wow, there’s just like how much time there is in a day. And how, oh, I was able to get so in touch with how I’m thinking, how I’m feeling. And again, I’m actually pretty good at doing that now on a daily basis, but it was very, like, just tend to really get in tune with all that and [00:21:00] have really some time and space to think and realizing how long the days truly are. And really to spend that Aloha, right. That concept of everything was a more chill vibe as it was coming home. I was ready to come home. I was ready to see my kids ready to get back to connecting with everyone here and getting into this book launch. For sure. I’m so excited for. I was like, well, what can I do to bring this vibe, continuing to bring it with me? How can I simplify things a little bit? And how can I make it even more meaningful? How can I connect with everyone even more? And that’s why I’m so excited for the book club that we’re doing for everybody. You. The book that everybody’s going to get to come, not just members. I’m also focused on Instagram and connecting more there. Bringing more of that back to me doing it and not just my team. And then again with that, we’re going to have to reallocate and be like, okay, I need to step out of these things more so I can really be connecting with all of you. And I also want to be, how can I drink more quality time with my kids and create systems in my teaching and my home life. So things aren’t taking up as much mental space, like decisions ahead of time is such a. Hub concept, [00:22:00] and these are all things I’m working on right now. And examples of choosing your direction. So again, my day-to-day is going to look a little different than yours, but it’s just being mindful of, oh, what am I? Life is working out what my life isn’t. And then there’s the power we talk about in chapter seven of conscious thinking. And one thing I share in that chapter is the concept that our brain wants to be right. More than it wants us to be happy. Let me say that again, our brain wants to be right. Even more than it wants to us to be happy. Like it’s like, no, I’d rather you be sad and I’d be right. Then you’ll be happy and I be wrong. Which isn’t that kind of funny? Our brain really wants to prove itself. Right. And that is why we really need to be conscious about our thinking about what we’re thinking and observe it and be like, wait, is this actually true? Or is this even what I want to think? And that’s where we talk about. How we can shift our thoughts into being more intentional and create an intentional model. Like we can look at what am I currently thinking? How has that cause me to feel, what am I doing when I feel that way? What results do they get from that too? If I switched to [00:23:00] this thought that actually does feel believable, which we talk about in the book, we talk about the concept of moving up those thoughts incrementally with some tools called bridge and ladder thoughts. So when you grab a copy of the book, make sure to check that out. But we can look at what we want to think. And then how is that going to make us feel, what are we going to do differently? And when we think of feel that way and how will that change our results. So when we think consciously that is just such a powerful way for us to choose our direction. Because again, like we talked about in observing ourselves, our thoughts really do control so much of our lives and. Just getting in touch with that, and also creating intentional time to process your feelings as well. Like how are you creating space for that? When you need to and regulating yourself and consciously creating that time in your day, even in your school day, even while you’re teaching, like having a brain break where you all get up and move together that can help you and your students regulate, for example, like just making conscious choices that are going to help you. In your life. Now the final chapter chapter eight in the choose. Your direction section is all [00:24:00] about goal setting. And the one thing that is a big caveat with goals is a lot of times we think a goal is as like, oh, I need to do this thing because then I’m going to be better when I do this thing. Or then it can be happy like that constant, like, I’ll be happy when I reached this goal or whatever. And that’s not going to work because then we’re not going to shame ourselves into reaching a goal. And, we’ve learned throughout the book and throughout these podcasts that it’s not the circumstance of anything that makes us happy. Right. It’s not reaching that goal. But our thoughts about where we are right now. And you can cultivate those feelings right now. So you don’t even have to set a goal, but are we, there are a couple of reasons we do want to set goals. And the first one is that they help us reboot our subconscious blocks. We have about ourselves because we will have that shame come up. We will have. Thoughts, we need to train and we will have feelings that come up. And it gives us an opportunity to use an apply and practice these tools. And it gives you direction again, creating that goal. It gives you that direction of where you want to go. So [00:25:00] you might end up there. You might end up learning and going in a completely different direction, but it’s giving you the direction for right now and removing those subconscious blocks. Like those thoughts, the disbelief, especially like, no, there’s no way it could do that. And then when you actually see yourself making progress, because you are busting through those limited beliefs. It’s so powerful. And another reason that we set goals is there are guide. I already kind of mentioned this, that our guide is we choose our direction. Right. They give us the direction to go. And a way we can do that is through using the self coaching model that I talk about a lot here on the podcast to create our goals. So we look at like the. We kind of work it backwards. Right? So usually we look at the circumstance thought feeling action result, but instead we’ll end with the result will be like, what is it? What is that goal? The result is you hit that goal, right? And then what do I need to do to hit that goal? The actions you write down, everything you would need to do to hit that goal. And then how would you need to feel to be able to do the, all those things without resistance? Right. So, how do you need to feel what emotion and then what is it you would need to think [00:26:00] to feel that way? And then your circumstances, just the fact that you set a goal to do that. That can be a circumstance. Like I set a goal to fill in the blank. And we have a whole worksheet and everything for you to do this. When you grab the workbook that goes along with the book, you’ll learn how to do that when you buy your copy of the book. So you have the book that has all the information and then the workbook that helps you apply, which also give you access to the educating rejuvenate app for the video tutorials, the book club replays, if you’re not able to come live and all of that. So we’re giving you so much, it’s crazy. And another thing I just want to mention is why is setting a goal in the choose your direction category and not align yourself? Cause you might be like, oh, aligning yourself. Isn’t that like? Cause the step three is to align yourself and that’s to be going the direction you want to go. And the reason I put goal setting in the choose your direction is the initial setting. The creation of the goals is you choosing right. You’re choosing what you want to do. You’re creating the plan and then actually following through and doing those things like the habits that you build. Actually tracking your habits, creating routines and everything that go along with those goals. Like the goal [00:27:00] is big picture creating the plan and then align is like the day to day of doing that. So we’ll talk about that even more next week. Okay. So let’s recap what we talked about today, about choosing our direction. It’s about knowing and getting clear on what do we want what is it that we want in our lives? And then we need to figure out what do we consciously need to think? How do, what do I want to believe in order to create that life, that teaching career that I want? We want to create goals and a plan. So we have a direction of where we want to go, essentially. That is a quick sum up of all of it. But again, there’s so much more to it. So many tools that you can use to utilize that and the book educated rejuvenate, a three step guide to revitalize your teaching, new your spirit and reignite your passion for life by Kelsey Sorenson. Okay. That was just fun to say. But the book is really going to help you. To do that. It’s going to outline everything. It’s really like I had members who were in the club for a year or more, and they said the book. They’ve been coming to calls and everything, but they’re like this book is [00:28:00] suddenly giving so much clarity to all the calls I’ve been to. So even if you’ve never come to one of our events or been in the club or anything, you’ve just been listening on the podcast. It’s going to give so much clarity. So why even talk about on the podcast, you’re going to cause to get on the podcast and I’m going to always just be rehashing things from the book. I’ll be getting new stories, new examples, new tools. But the book is really going to give you that essential framework, that kind of baseline layer of understanding of why and what we’re doing here. So then when he listened to the podcast, it’s going to make this so much more powerful. So I highly recommend. Snagging, your copy of the book is going to impact you way more than it impacts me. Let’s be for real, I am confident that this book is going to do well and that it’s going to be received well, and that we’re going to get people purchasing the book and everything. I get like pennies on the dollar for each book sold. It’s not about that. But for you, what you’re going to get from it, the transformation you can see when you read the book and then not just read it, but also utilize that workbook and apply what you learned. And come to the book club calls or watch the replays. If [00:29:00] you’re not able to come live. It’s going to honestly make such a difference for you. And so again, grab your copy of the book if you haven’t yet, and you can find it on Amazon, we’ll link it in the show notes. We’ll link it in the episode description even so you can find it right on apple or Spotify and all that. This book is going to just make such a difference for you. If you use and apply what you learned it has for me. And I know it will for you too. Those of you who have a copy and I’ve already started diving in, I would love if you would leave a review on the book on Amazon, like I mentioned, I really want to get this book into the hands, into as many educators as possible. And it’s not for me is because it’s going to be so much more powerful for everybody else. The book isn’t about me, it’s about you. You the listener, you, the, your educator. Friends and family, it is going to help and support you to not be so burned out. Like when we did the poll in industry, I went over 300 teachers that they’re almost always. Putting their career above themselves. Like I need that to change. And this book is a big part of that and it’s really a movement and we’re all coming together. [00:30:00] And so I’d love for you to leave a review of the book because that is going to help it bring more on Amazon. It’s going to help people to know, oh, this is a book I should buy. So if you would take a moment to do that, that would mean so much to me. Okay. We will be back next week and we’ll talk all about. The third step of the framework, which is to align yourself, we’ll talk then. Okay, so all of that, that is step two of the inside out teacher framework. First we observe, we tune into our thoughts, our feelings, our nervous system, everything that’s going on inside of us that we tend to ignore because we’re pushing through so much. We’re tuning into that, and then with that we’re going to choose. We’re going to be intentional. We’re going to pick what is one little thing I can do to get me the right direction? What is, um, one way I’m going to, like, maybe take a breath before, um, before I react, or one little thing that I’m going to do to choose more intentionally as I move through my day. Choosing, deciding what you want. And then next is to align, Aligning is [00:31:00] actually following through, doing those things we’ve chosen, adjusting them as needed, because sometimes we might be a little ambitious with what we originally choose. And then be like, “Hey, actually, this needs some adjusting,” or, “Actually, maybe this isn’t even what I wanted.” Um, and or maybe you just find yourself get off track and it’s coming back. All of that is alignment. And throughout, we are continuing all three steps. We don’t move on from observing. We don’t move on from choosing. We just layer them onto each other. So we’re going to talk even more about that next week. In the meantime, make sure you’re on my email list at educateandrejuvenate.com/teacherbrainbreak.
