Get kids thinking deeper about math by learning how to write a story problem… backwards! Our digital 36 Weeks of Backwards Story Problems 1st Grade should take no longer than a few minutes each day, so they are easy to fit into your schedule while packing a powerful punch!
Kids are given an answer and follow the steps to write addition and subtraction word problems with that answer. They will brainstorm who and what the problem is about, write the addition or subtraction word problem, and draw a picture.

Each backwards story problem contains five steps that can be completed daily throughout the week. However, you may choose to complete all five steps in one day if you prefer.

Write equations they can think of that equal the answer given
Brainstorm WHO and WHAT topic ideas for their addition or subtraction word problem
Using an equation from the first step, draft a story problem including the WHO and WHAT
Compose a short story that incorporates their math equation into an addition or subtraction word problem
